When can i start watching naruto shippuden?

That's exactly true. The fight between Naruto and Sasuke is the last important part of the story in Naruto. After that, just skip to Shippuden. Shippuden starts with Naruto returning to the leaf village after 2 1/2 years of training with Jiraiya. That's all you really need to know.
You can go here if you want to read just a quick synopsis of the filler episodes you will miss, but I promise you they really don't matter. They're called "filler" for a reason.
